The State should Censor the Internet

Mr. President Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate:

           It is an opportunity to stand here to all of you and advocate a cause that we need to censor some of Internet websites here in our country. The internet is now a universal medium of communication, entertainment, business, studying and like. Every moment, world is becoming more tech-savvy. Some of us been using internet websites to have an entertainment and information on what’s happening to the world, this might help us to know everything so that our minds are updated on happenings in daily news. Because of increasing amount of cybercrimes, many people want to have an internet censorship in the Philippines; so that teenagers and youngsters would do not see any private websites that is not suitable to their age.

          The Philippine Cybercrime Law represents a threat and a start of internet censorship in the country as claimed by many users and protesters. The main points covered by this law allow prosecution of individuals dealing with trafficking, cybersex, child pornography and other questionable types of content or activities on the web. It may also lessen the increasing amount of children whose victims of sex trafficking and pornography. Some are over using apps such as facebook or twitter, that may lead them to exposed to violence, hate, sex, illegal substances, and false information. It may also cause illegal downloading of contents, pirating movies that may violate in the laws.

           However, Philippine Cybercrime Law might lessen the number of people who have been a victim of a cyber crimes. Some netizens who are concerned of proliferation of child pornography, cyber bullying and other applications that may cause cyber addiction appealing the internet censoring in the court. The internet is filled with dangerous information that children would have freedom to access. They could be influenced or curious and think that it would be alright if they just take a look. If we do filtering or blocking some harmful websites and applications we can secure that future generations can use technologies without worrying for a problem.

           Internet censorship has a great impact to the people who have been using technologies such as companies that their business need to use internet for their job because it might cause to their company bankrupt because social websites are their one main source of business. But we don’t just focus on businesses as such, we need to be more focus in our own safety. We must do is look at the risks that can cause by using internet websites and for the people who is suffering under cyber crimes and in order to convince those who unwittingly in this situations in our civilized society.
